Very personal and exciting performances of Beethoven’s Eroica Variations and Liszt’s B minor sonata.

Her quicksilver brilliance lends a special wit and charm to Haydn’s D major Sonata, HobXVI/37, and she is admirably sensitive in the contrasting gravity of the central Largo e sostenuto. Beethoven’s early G major Sonata, Op 14 No 2, is, again, as fleet and dextrous as you could wish even if, ideally, you miss the wealth of character, of light and shade, of Kempff, while Liszt’s First Mephisto Waltz is dispatched with skittering aplomb.

The Bach-Busoni Chaconne is impetuous and individual, light years away from, say, Michelangeli’s autocracy. Yet it is entirely successful in its own terms. Hopefully we shall be hearing much more of this exceptional artist. BR-Klassik’s sound for eaSonus leaves nothing to be desired and Carmen Delia Romero’s glowing tribute to Beraia is richly deserved.

Tuesday, 1 October 2013, at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, saw the success of young Georgian pianist Tamar Beraia. It was the second edition of the European Piano Nights (EPN), an innovative musical event that is both a concert and a competition.

As part of its programme to promote the arts, and to complement initiatives in the fields of visual arts, the Institute launched its European Piano Nights in 2012, to promote first-class emerging young talents.

Four young pianists took part, bringing together talent from all over the world: Antonii Baryshevskyi (Ukraine), Tamar Beraia (Georgia), Rémi Geniet (France) and Tomoki Sakata (Japan) performed the programme of their choice in front of a packed audience.

These accomplished pianists were selected by Marian Rybicki, the musical director of the event and in charge of a masterclass at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot.

The quality of the individual performances and the variety of the pianistic programmes were visibly well received by the audience. It was the public itself which voted on the laureates of the evening. Involving the audience in the voting helped to give this event a special appeal for attendees and participants alike.

The laureates were:

Winner: Tamar Beraia, with an unrivalled programme and sensual performance of Albeniz’s Almeria, De Falla’s Danza de Fuego and Listz’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1.

2nd place: Antonii Baryshevskyi, with a very moving interpretation of Bizet/Horowitz’s Variations sur “Carmen”, and Stravinsky’s Trois Mouvements de Petrouchka, extrait: La Semaine Grasse

Both won the heart of the audience and critical acclaim.
The winner, Tamar Beraia will perform a recital at the Philharmonie in Spring 2014.

This initiative is to be placed within the context of the EIBI Arts Programme, leveraging and enhancing a greater visibility for emerging talents in various artistic disciplines and creating an active dialogue with and within the arts.
